Big Fun Little Package - By Paul Mason

For anyone who has kids, you know to be careful with purchases because in six months the kids will have out grown whatever your hard earned money was spent on. This is often one of the first things to be considered when making an investment for your child. When getting the rundown on the Mongoose 90 we were pleasantly surprised when we heard about all the options and mods available for upgrades on this machine.

In stock trim the mini quad is quite gentle and easy to handle. At the same time, the stance is quite wide giving a stable platform for any youngster to learn with. Additional features to assist with the learning curve is an electric starter with a tether switch that when disengaged will kill the engine. A throttle stop screw and ignition limiter also assists in not letting your child get too carried away right off the bat. Bright headlights and reflectors all the way around will also give you peace of mind during those early stages. So the Kymco has all the right things for a beginner mini rider, but can it keep up as young rider increases their skill level? Well, there a few things you can do to mod the bike, starting with removing the restrictors. Although we can’t fill you in on those mods, any reputable shop can currently free up some power. Even with additional power the wide stance and big boy Maxxis tires can easily handle it. So how will it stop with the extra power? Dual drum brakes up front and a hydraulic disk brake in the rear easily handles those duties. Still not enough? Well the engine in this machine has many high performance upgrades available including high compression pistons, camshafts, clutches and more. When fully decked out, the Mongoose 90 has the ability to become a competitive race quad, and has been proven on the track with many race wins. In fact our test rider for the day Aaron Salib has won provincial and regional titles aboard a modded version of the Mongoose.

“With the wide stance and good tires it handles great. I really like the electric start and disk brake.” Said Salib “It’s kinda slow compared to my race quad, but I learned to ride on one just like this. It’s cool to think with how fast my race quad is and that it started as one of these!”
As you can see this little quad is quite versatile and a great way to introduce your youngsters to the sport of ATV’s.
